Visiting County Fermanagh

Northern Ireland's Lake District

The atrraction of Fermanagh lies in the tranquillity of its crystal clear lakes and surroundings, rich heritage and wide choice of visitor attractions, and also in the friendliness of the people and that famous Fermanagh welcome.

Located in the south-west of Northern Ireland, the region is approx. 120 km from Belfast and 160 km from Dublin, making it an easily accessible destination from all major air and sea-ports.

County Fermanagh is known as Northern Irelands lake district making it the perfect holiday destination for cruising and other water based holidays. The 70 km of lakes situated in the county are now linked to the Shannon system in the Irish Republic via the Shannon-Erne Waterway Canal, making the entire system the longest navigable inland waterway in Europe.

For those who do not wish to captain their own cruiser, access to the lakelands is still possible through the tourist attractions offering short trips to many of the historic and charming islands situated on Lower and Upper Lough (Lake) Erne.

Fishing is naturally one of the more popular activities for both visitor and local alike, with this in mind it comes as no surprise that the day's catch often ends up on the dinner tables of the large variety of restaurants and eateries in the area.

The county itself is steeped in history and heritage, evident through the many historic islands dotted throughout the waterways, also through impressive National Trust owned stately properties. The area houses the remains of several plantation castles dating back to the early seventeenth century.

Other attractions include the world renowned Belleek Pottery, Ireland's oldest pottery, facilities include a museum and gift shop, guided tours are available exemplifying all stages of the manufacturing process.
Another unique visitor attraction is the Marble Arch Caves - Northern Ireland's only underground cave system open to the public.

The main town in County Fermanagh is Enniskillen; this picturesque island town hosts a multitude of attractions including the Enniskillen castle and heritage centre and the Buttermarket craft and design centre. When travelling to Fermanagh make the Tourist Information Centre your first port of call, this award winning centre houses a wealth of local and national visitor information.

Fermanagh is a celebration of peace and tranquillity. The landscape is green, serene yet spectacular, it is as varied as it is beautiful. Come and experience one of the most stunning jewels in Ireland's crown, a warm welcome awaits...
