Derrylin
Derrylin
is the first village that travellers from Cavan Town and Dublin
experience as they enter Fermanagh. The whole village is overlooked
by the two hundred metre high Knockninny Hill and surrounded by
greenery. The village is built around a long, straight main street,
which is also the main Enniskillen road.
Housing a population well below 1000, Derrylin also services the
wider rural area and is well served with schools, bars and small
shops, although serious shoppers have to head for Enniskillen. Blake’s
Bar on the Main Street is a good stopping off point, and worth a
visit to experience some local artwork…
Derrylin
also boasts two fine churches, with Kinawley Parish Church, standing
prominently at the South end of the village and St Ninnidh’s
nearer the foot of Knockninny.
A large stone church erected 1867-76 close to the remains of the
medieval monastery of St. Natalis. The interior is " light
and nicely articulated, with a five-bay arcade on cast-iron E.E.
columns...the window detailing is curious" ( Rowan ) Listed
building. Received money from the Heritage lottery fund.
There is also Holy Trinity Church on the shore of Lough Erne at
Derryvore, about 4 miles from Derrylin.
